Last Saturday was the 27th Colorado Children’s Chorale Mini-Golf Tournament. Thanks to a brilliant concept and subsequent implementation by volunteer-board member- parent-and-all ‘round supporter -extraordinaire Corry Doty back in 1986, we are still raising tens of thousands of dollars annually to support our young singers and community programs.
The staff stormed into Fun City early Saturday morning and by 9am we were off and golfing! Requisite attire for the day runs the gamut from football and soccer uniforms to tutus, pajamas, jeans and t-shirts. Our new-favorite red 40th anniversary t-shirts were everywhere, some stylishly gathered or hemmed, and all worn proudly. Sparkly shoes, cowboy boots, and brightly colored socks, along with every variety of hair bauble, rounded out each individual fashion statement. And the future of the CCC is definitely bright, with some of the cutest little siblings one can imagine! One of my favorite moments of the day came when I asked a younger sibling, who dutifully came to report a hole-in-one, “What is your name?” “I am my sister’s brother!”
Prep Choir kicked off the event in style, with Hope scoring the first hole-in-one of the day. It is always interesting to watch the various golfing styles – right-handed, left-handed, single-handed, careful aiming, no aiming, between the legs and sometimes over the head. Hole #3 often involves laying down and pushing your ball through the tunnel using your club as a pool cue. Speaking of Prep Choir, the count of MISSING teeth must be in the hundreds. Their smiles are sooooo cute!
As is our practice, all holes-in-one get reported and are dutifully recorded by the staff. There is a good amount of competition surrounding this practice. Prep Choir usually wins, but according to the other three choirs (and perhaps their conductors) this is ONLY due to the fact that THEIR FATHERS are playing with them. Mr. Branam just throws both fists in the air, closes his eyes, and sends out a silent cheer…to all of the Prep Choir fathers! Concert Choir and Tour Choir were tied for 2nd place until Josh showed up at the very last minute, in full football regalia (including PINK socks!), and scored two more holes-in-one for Tour Choir. With that, the final hole-in-one tally was:
Prep Choir, 87
Tour Choir, 61
Concert Choir, 59
Apprentice Choir, 55
We are always excited to see so many alums at Mini-Golf, not only older siblings, but alums who are now parents. Shawna Freiberg Mendez and Alec; Susie Gersabeck Lee and Evelyn; Evyan Strompolos Maniatis and Eleni; Roberta Valdez Sladovnik and Claire; Anne Quaintance Stylianou and Marina; Libby Hilton Barnacle and Louise; and Laurel Graff Maupin and Makenna. If I missed anyone, please let me know!
Winning the prize for the most amazing fans and supporters in the world? Chuck and Marlene Fiser!
Their children, Stef and Chris, long since graduated from the Chorale, they continue to come out every year and play a round of golf with us. A hearty BRAVO and THANK YOU to the Fisers – it wouldn’t be a Mini-Golf Saturday without you!
Another BRAVO goes out to all of the grandparents who faithfully deliver children to rehearsals, performances and, yes, Mini-Golf. We love you Grandma and Grandpa!
And we especially want to thank all of the amazing volunteers and sponsors who made the day a success. As always, without the time, talent and treasure you share so graciously we would not be the organization we are today.
